RANKINGS

Career Draft GM + Owner OVR

Who drafted best? Who built the strongest franchise? Owner OVR combines both without pretending they are the same thing.

Career-qualified owners require at least three analyzed draft seasons. OVR blends drafting ability with franchise legacy.

WINNING MATTERS

Franchise Legacy

Championships, Super Bowl appearances, playoff rate, division titles and sustained winning power the legacy model.

Salary Cap Era

Beginning in 2017, COA draft value is measured against auction dollars spent. Certified auction seasons now include 2017–2025, with budget efficiency, $1 finds, premium-value hits, auction busts, the 2018 move to 0.5 PPR, and the first three-year auction GM trend.

HOW COA RATINGS WORK

Methodology

The goal is simple: separate drafting skill from franchise success, then combine them only when calculating Owner OVR.

Championships = Super Bowl wins. Super Bowl Appearances = total trips to the championship game.
DRAFT VALUE

Points Above Expected

Points Above Expected measures how much better or worse a draft pick performed compared with players at the same position who had a similar draft cost.

QB compares to QB
RB compares to RB
WR compares to WR
TE compares to TE
K compares to K
DST compares to DST
AUCTION

Similar Price

A player is compared with the 9 nearest same-position auction salaries from that same season.

SNAKE DRAFT

Similar Draft Spot

A player is compared with the 9 nearest same-position overall draft picks from that same season.

SIMPLE EXAMPLE

$1 WR

Actual COA Points 220
−
Expected COA Points 120
=
Points Above Expected +100

That WR produced 100 more COA points than we normally expect from a WR drafted at about that price.

ONE SEASON

Season Draft GM Score

Every draft receives a score based on both what the roster produced and how good the owner's decisions were.

55%

Draft Outcome

  • Drafted COA production
  • Total Points Above Expected
  • Return on draft cost
  • Value-hit rate
  • Avoiding true performance busts
45%

GM Decision

  • Availability-adjusted value
  • Healthy-player hit rate
  • Bust avoidance
  • Premium/high-cost decisions

Injuries and very limited availability receive less GM blame than healthy players who simply underperform.

PICK CLASSIFICATIONS

How Draft Picks Are Labeled

COA does not treat every successful or unsuccessful pick the same. Each drafted player is classified by how the player performed compared with the expected return for that position and draft cost.

◆
ELITE VALUE

Diamond Pick

A major draft win. The player dramatically exceeded the normal return for a similar player at the same position and draft cost.

Requires a strong positive Points Above Expected result.
+
GOOD VALUE

Value Hit

A clearly successful pick. The player produced meaningfully more COA points than expected for the draft investment.

Not every Value Hit reaches Diamond level.
≈
EXPECTED RETURN

About What You Paid For

The player performed around the expected level for a comparable player at that position and draft cost.

Neither a major win nor a major miss.
↓
TRUE MISS

Performance Bust

The player had a meaningful opportunity to play but produced substantially less than expected for the draft investment.

Used only when there was enough playing time to fairly judge the pick.
✚
AVAILABILITY

Availability Loss

The player missed most of the season. The lost production still affected the fantasy team, but COA does not treat it the same as a healthy player who simply performed badly.

Typically 0–4 games played.
◐
SMALL SAMPLE

Limited-Sample Miss

The player appeared enough to create some lost value, but not enough to judge the selection like a full-season Performance Bust.

Typically 5–8 games played.
THE MATH UNDERNEATH

How the thresholds work

The classifications use position-adjusted Points Above Expected, so quarterbacks are compared with quarterbacks, running backs with running backs, wide receivers with wide receivers, and so on.

Diamond Pick PAE is at least the greater of +100 points or +75% of expected production.
Value Hit PAE is at least the greater of +25 points or +25% of expected production.
Negative Pick PAE is at least the greater of −35 points or −30% of expected production below expectation.
Availability Rule 0–4 games = Availability Loss · 5–8 = Limited-Sample Miss · 9+ = eligible for Performance Bust.
SIMPLE EXAMPLE

Two good picks can have different labels

Player A

Expected: 120 COA points
Actual: 160 COA points

+40 PAE
Likely Value Hit
Player B

Expected: 120 COA points
Actual: 245 COA points

+125 PAE
Diamond Pick

Both picks helped the owner, but Player B created a much larger advantage relative to the draft investment.

CAREER DRAFTING

Draft GM Rating

98 DRAFT GM

Think Madden rating — not a percentage.

Career Draft GM Rating compares an owner's career Draft GM performance against other qualified COA owners.

A 98 Draft GM Rating does not mean the owner made the correct pick 98% of the time.

It means that owner ranks near the very top of the qualified COA career drafting group.

Owners need at least 3 Draft GM seasons to qualify for the career rating.
FRANCHISE SUCCESS

Legacy Rating

Legacy measures what the franchise accomplished over time. Draft performance is not part of the Legacy score.

30% Championships Super Bowl wins
15% Super Bowl Appearances Total championship-game trips
15% Playoff Rate
15% Winning Percentage
10% Division Titles
10% Average Finish
5% Relative Points For
98 LEGACY

Also a 60–99 comparative rating.

A 98 Legacy Rating means the owner has one of the strongest winning résumés in COA history.

It does not mean 98% successful. It shows where that franchise ranks compared with the other qualified owners.

FINAL OWNER RATING

Owner OVR

60% Draft GM Rating
+
40% Legacy Rating
=
OWNER OVR

Owner OVR gives slightly more weight to roster-building skill while still making championships and sustained franchise success a major part of the final rating.

WHY THERE ARE MULTIPLE RATINGS

Drafting and winning are not the same thing.

An owner can draft extremely well and still have a weaker championship résumé. Another owner can have elite championship history without ranking first in Draft GM.

COA keeps those achievements separate so the history remains honest, then combines them only for Owner OVR.
